HERO OR VILLAIN?
My left-wing friends say to me, "Don't knock Tony.  If he fails , think what the alternatives are.""  I know what they mean; Gordon Brown, all tax and no fun, or Michael Howard and his new party , Tories without Talent.  There is not alternative.   God , I sound like Margaret Thatcher.

Actually, I miss her.  Thatcher was terrifying but you knew what she stood for, and you knew where you stood  in relation to that.

There were no policies in these days , now there is only politics.  Tony will change his mind about everything- from fox hunting to the euro- but the one thing he never changes his mind about is that he is always right.

Did a Socialist Prime Minister really declare war on a country with no weapons?  Can it be true that our Labour leader " regretted"  the downfall of the right- wing Spanish government  and that he counts gun-toting George , the Superpower thug, as his "friend"?
When we voted for him, did anyone imagine that this man would talk about ' morality' of pre-emptive war , or align Britain so closely with America that our new currency is more likely to be the dollar than the euro?

I can't help thinking that the coming referendum is a Tony way of getting himself out of Europe, while calling it " the will of the people".  We have had no informed debate on the matter, and for many Britons, America is just the easier option.  The language sounds the same, and the food is as unpleasant as most British food, and they have Hollywood.  Perfect for little Britain.

The Tony I voted for was a European, and it didn't matter that the tabloids slugged him off for holidaying in Chiantishire - at last, Britain was going to become a real part of Europe, with a leader who could make the proposition attractive , because he was attractive.

Tony could have taken us into Europe, instead he wasted his energies wrecking the House of Lords, with nothing to go in its place, and after that, he decided to wreck Iraq- but for its own good, because Tony knows what is good for people.

Why do I suspect he is trying to get out of Europe?  Partly because his friend George W Bush would prefer it, and Tony likes to please George, and partly because his move to axe compulsory language teaching in state schools, is hardly the move of a man who wants  the next generation to be fit for the Great Abroad.  English is a world-class language , but our arrogant and stooped refusal to prioritise language teaching for our kids doesn't fit us for the job market, or for cultural exchange.  Thanks,Tony.  Fool Britannia.  Wave the Stars and Stripes.

Tony had been personally supportive of gay rights, though it doesn't seem to worry him that his friend George wants to amend the Constitution to make sure nothing as nasty as gay marriage ever undermine the American way.  I am glad that, in merry England, gay people will not be quite as second -class as they used to be , but let's get one thing straight: Britain is only catching up on most of Europe , where partnership rights and even marriage have been the norm for some time.  The USA is as slow on human rights here as they were when "colored" people were segregated on buses.  If Tony went into Europe, Britain would have to wake up on all kind of civil liberty issues.  But we won't wake up, because Tony is in bed with George.

But the war...the war.  War is never the answer.  Violence does not solve violence.  Saddam was a tyrant and a bully , so a bigger bully went after him.  Tony and George say it is OK to invade other countries and kill people we don't like.  Are we surprised that Israel is assassinating Palestinian leaders, or that India is threatening to nuke Pakistan , or that Iran may be starting a nuclear weapons programe?

Tony Blair has agreed to a new world order.  He calls it the Fight Against Terrorism.  A new set of words, same old violent values.  Since the end of the Cold War there has been no proper enemy ; thank God we've found one.  Now even the Left can be Right again.
